Abraham House
Bronx, NY
Founded in 1993 by Rikers Island Catholic Prison Chaplains in response to the high recidivism rate and lack of effective rehabilitative services they witnessed in New York City jails; Abraham House began as an innovative Alternative to Incarceration Program.
In 2023, His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan announced the planned merger of Abraham House into Thrive For Life, which when complete will make it our second house of studies. Residents who enter through Abraham House receive a comprehensive continuity of care, including tailored therapeutic and wellness resources, personal and spiritual mentorship, a unique education plan, and access to a suite of other supportive services to ensure permanent and successful reentry.
While the formal merger is still in process, Abraham House and Thrive For Life have been working closely together as seamless partners to deliver a comprehensive continuity of care to our returning brothers continuing the good work of education.
We are currently finalizing the merger of Abraham House, Inc. into Thrive For Life Prison Project, Inc. which is subject to regulatory approvals expected over the coming months.
Abraham House was founded in 1993, to break the cycle of incarceration by offering the incarcerated and their relatives, as well as families and children living on the margins of our society, a place of hope and community where lives can be rebuilt, families mended, lessons learned and where men, women, and children receive the necessary and practical tools to become productive citizens.
Abraham House is also home to the only food pantry run entirely by justice-impacted individuals in New York City, serving over 200 families every Saturday at 9 AM EST from our location at 340 Willis Avenue in the South Bronx. Here, residents take an active part in giving back to the community, offering fresh and non-perishable food bags to families and individuals in need who come from all over New York City.
