A History of College Education Behind the Walls with Luke Lapean, SJ

With the recent restoration of Pell Grants by the U.S. Congress for incarcerated students, an estimated 436,000 people behind the walls will once again have the opportunity to pursue college education. Numerous studies have shown that education is an especially powerful tool in reducing recidivism, provoking lasting transformation and enrichment of the mind and soul. Luke Lapean, SJ, one of our Jesuit scholastics working behind the walls at Rikers Island with Fr. Zach, shares with us a bit about the history of higher education behind the walls and new developments in this space post-Pell restoration.

Special thanks are owed to our student volunteer interns from Regis High School who assisted with research on this project!
